Little Creatures Brewery

We invite you to join the Chair, various members of the organising committee and CAA colleagues already in Perth to enjoy an evening out in the beautiful town of Freemantle before the start of the conference. We have chosen to go to Little Creatures in Fremantle which has something for everyone. It sits right on the bay with beautiful views across the water.
There is a Loft Bar which has tapas style food (open until 11 pm), a restaurant (open until 10 pm) and a brewery house (open until 9pm). So in fact it is possible to visit all 3. They do have cider, wine and non-alcoholic  drinks too.

Booking
No booking is possible. Please note they have limited room for groups of more than 12. This just means that we will have to sit in groups of 12.

Getting there/travel by train or bus
Note there is a simple train trip (from various places around Perth) straight to Freemantle and then a comfortable walk, less than 1 km, to Little Creatures. A bus can also be caught from the train station to the Esplanade and a 2 minute walk from there to Little Creatures for those who feel like a shorter walk. A link to the Train schedule is available here. The Sunday schedule is on the bottom of the page.
Buses to Fremantle can be caught from several locations in the city. You can find more information here.

All the Conference delegates (regardless of what type of registration they have), are invited to participate to the Welcome Reception that will be held at University Club of Western Australia. Guest will be welcomed in the Alfresco Terrace, a partially covered balcony on the first floor of the Club, which provides guests with a unique alfresco space overlooking the university campus. Canapés and excellent Western Australian wine will be offered to the CAA 2013 Perth delegates.
The Opening Welcome reception is supported by the FAIMS Project.

Look Up Perth Tour

Many people claim that Perth has virtually no heritage buildings left in its city centre, suggesting most of the older buildings were demolished in the 1960s and 70s to make way for the ‘concrete giants’ which now dominate the city skyline. Whilst it is true many of our older buildings have gone, there are still plenty left, most of which goes totally unnoticed. During this ‘Look Up Perth’ walk, Executive Director of Heritage Perth, Richard Offen, will reveal the history of some of Perth’s superb wealth of heritage buildings, telling the stories of their origins and the people behind their creation. From the city’s fine Town Hall to Perth’s answer to New York’s Art-Deco skyscrapers, Richard will demonstrate how these places, and the characters that created them, contribute to Perth’s unique sense of place and history.

McHenry Hohnen Vintners

The official opening of the Poster Session, featuring new work by international artists, will take place in the ground floor foyer of the University Club on Wednesday 27th March at 4:15pm. Our distinguished panel of CAA experts will be judging the posters at that time also. Across the foyer space at the same time, the McHenry Hohnen Vintners will be proudly presenting their wines for tasting and purchase. Wines can delivered overseas or locally or picked up from a CAA representative that same day or the following day. The wine tasting will be run by Murray McHenry, himself.

Winery
McHenry Hohnen Vintners is a family owned wine producer sourcing grapes from three vineyards owned within the families of David Hohnen and his brother-in-law Murray McHenry. Within the three vineyards, fourteen varieties are cultivated. These reflect the region's heritage with the Bordeaux varieties (semillon, sauvignon blanc, malbec, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot). They also acknowledge the Mediterranean climate of Margaret River with varieties associated with southern France and Spain (marsanne, roussanne, grenache, mataro, shiraz, tempranillo). Add chardonnay and zinfandel and you have the foundations from which they select fruit for the McHenry Hohnen range of wines.

The Old Brewery

The Conference Dinner will be held in the Thomas Hardwick Function Room of The Old Brewery, which pays tribute to the original Brew master. The Old Brewery provides a stunning riverside feature venue. Showcasing all that Western Australia has to offer in lifestyle, fresh produce and friendly nature, it is a quintessential West Australian experience. The buildings that comprise The Old Swan Brewery Complex were originally built in 1838 as a mill for timber-cutting as well as flour-grinding. The Steam Mills were later taken over as a convict depot, then used as a tannery, and then a restaurant. In 1877 it was acquired by the Swan Brewery Company. The original Swan Brewery was a relatively small concern established in 1877 by a partnership between John Maxwell Ferguson, a Scottish sea trader and Captain, and William Mumme, a brewer with German and colonial brewing experience.

Getting there
The Old Brewery is conveniently located within five minutes drive (approx. 1.5km) from Perth’s Central Business District, and 2.6 km from the Conference venue (about 30 minutes walk).
A bus has been organised to pick up delegates from the Conference Venue around 7pm (exact time to be confirmed). It will make a single trip to the Restaurant, so make sure to be there on time. The bus will depart at 11:30 pm on a return trip and will stop in three CBD locations and back in front of the Conference Venue.
If you’re coming via car, simply drive out of the city along Mounts Bay Road and after a minute or two, look for the signage on your left. There is ample (228 bays) secure parking, just across the road for very reasonable rates. The weatherproof overpass provides easy walkway access right to the front door. There are also a number of free regular bus services to and from the CBD.

Captain Stirling Hotel

We invite you all again to join the Chair, various members of the organizing committee and CAA colleagues to enjoy an hour or two relaxing together after the conference. We have chosen to go to the popular and very close establishment called the Captain Stirling Hotel. It is just a few minutes walk from the University and we can all slowly congregate there as the sessions complete. It is a very attractive and pleasant place to enjoy meeting with friends and is the place that UWA students and staff often go. We will eat something there before moving to the Hula Bula Bar.

We can book our own seating area if you let us know at registration or before that you want to come – there is a maximum number of people of 30 at this stage.

This is a cocktail bar like no other in the centre of town. Hula Bula Bar is the only authentic Tiki Bar in Australia. Lavish Decor, Incredible Tiki Mugs, Exquisite Mai Tais. Great atmosphere. It even mentions archaeologists being responsible for the resurrection of the Rum Cocktail! Obviously the place to go for a fun wind down and the last chance to wear our graceful Hawaiian attire.

Please note that the bar is only allowed a specific number of people at any one time. As it is Easter Thursday they expect to be busy from quite early on so you need to arrive as close as possible to the booking time of 8:30pm and before 9pm. If the bar fills up and your come later you might have to line up and wait for people to leave to enter.
