Travel to Williamsburg

Williamsburg is easily accessible by plane, train, and car. Located on the east coast of Virginia, Williamsburg is about 240 km (150 miles) south of Washington, D.C. and midway between Richmond and Norfolk.

By Air

Convenient access via major airlines is possible with more than 200 flights, including nearly 30 non-stops, arriving daily to three airports just 25 to 45 minutes away: Newport News-Williamsburg, Richmond International, and Norfolk. Most international travelers will need to fly through one of the major east coast airports before catching a short connecting flight to one of the local regional airports. Each has rental car and limousine services. The closest major international airport is Dulles Airport in Washington D.C.

Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport (757-877-0221; airport code: PHF) is the closest airport, only a 25-minute drive to the Williamsburg Lodge and the Historic Area.

Richmond International Airport (804-226-3000; airport code: RIC) is approximately 45 minutes west of Williamsburg.

Norfolk International Airport (757-857-3200; airport code: ORF) is approximately 45 minutes east of Williamsburg.

There are a variety of Ground Transportation options from the Newport News, Richmond, and Norfolk airports. Tidewater Coach is offering shuttles, which must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance, from all three airports. For further information and costs, please visit their website at http://tidewatercoach.com/CWF_CAA.html. Additional information on other transportation options can be found by accessing the Ground Transportation link from each airport home page. Each airport is served by different companies, so it is important to use only the information for your specific arrival airport.

Dulles International Airport (703-572-2700; airport code: IAD) outside of Washington, D.C. is the closest major international airport.

For those wishing to rent a car, rather than take a connecting flight, Dulles is approximately a 2½ to 3 hour drive to Williamsburg under normal driving conditions. During the morning and evening rush hours, the trip will take significantly longer. Passengers can also take the train from Washington to Williamsburg, but this requires transferring to Union Station in downtown Washington. Currently there are only two trains a day to Williamsburg, so checking the schedule is advisable and reservations are required.

By Train or Bus

Amtrak (1-800-872-7245; 757-229-8750) currently offers two trains daily to and from Washington, D.C. and the northeast corridor (Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Boston). All Amtrak trains serving Williamsburg are reserved seating, so purchasing tickets prior to your trip is recommended. The train station is in the Williamsburg Transportation Center, which is just blocks from the Historic Area and provides car rentals, a cab stand, and Greyhound Bus connections.
